Turns out vinyl needs a solid surface to stick to. I remedied that by sealing it with a polycrylic coat. I learned from making the corn hole game that vinyl needs a sealer underneath to help adhere to. I was a little nervous about using a sealer since the canvas would then get painted on.
Vinyl should stick decently to unfinished wood, but if you sand and coat it with either paint or a clear coat, it will adhere much easier. You definitely want to wait and make sure your paint is nice and cured before you stick your vinyl to it. I would give it at least 24 hours.
A wall’s paint or finish will greatly effect vinyl adhesion. Gloss paints are the easiest for vinyl to adhere to, while matte paints are the most difficult. It just so happens that the properties that make these paints dirt resistant and cleanable also make them resistant to vinyl application.
The main surfaces include wood, plastic, glass, and metal. Position it on your computer, on your car, on your wall, or on your window. As long as the surface is flat, vinyl stickers will probably stick to it.
Paint Selection Choose an exterior paint made entirely of acrylic latex and not a blend of other paints. Latex bonds tightly to smooth vinyl surfaces and remains flexible enough to withstand expansion and contraction as temperatures fluctuate.
If your vinyl is still not sticking to your freshly smoothed piece of wood, adding a layer of paint or varnish will also help it stick. Sometimes wood just has too many loose splinters, dust residue, or nature elements that can stick to your vinyl instead.
Since the plastic is smooth and nonporous, the vinyl should stick fairly easily. If you are having trouble, burnish again and peel even more slowly, using your fingernail to help “guide” the vinyl off the transfer tape. But really, it should work really nicely on plastic. Tada!
You can use any Silhouette vinyl or Cricut vinyl to do this project, but be sure you are using permanent adhesive vinyl. Once the words were cut I weeded out the excess vinyl and used Con-tact paper to transfer the vinyl to a dry canvas. The dry paint creates a textured surface for the vinyl to stick to.
Use adhesive vinyl, like Oracle or Avery.
You can use an iron to heat set acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is a very useful artistic tool. The medium dries quickly and is quite permanent. Luckily, heat setting acrylic paint is simple.
